On Wednesday, 6 June, 2018 at 7 p.m., the Pignatelli Museum will host the inauguration of a Stefano Cerio exhibit entitled Amusement Places. The exhibit, curated by Denise Pagano, has been promoted by the Polo Museale in collaboration with Incontri Internazionali d’Arte and Studio Trisorio.
For the first time, this exhibit gathers a selection of 30 large works as well as two videos taken from 5 series of works developed by the artist on places and architectures which are dedicated to recreation and free time.
The Aquapark series (2010), the ski slopes and lifts in the Night Ski series (2011), the Cruise shipseries (2012), the sites in Chinese Fun (2013) and the parks in the Night Games series (2017) all have in common that they were photographed without anyone present and when they were not open to the public. This creates a sensation of malaise in the spectator who seeks recognizability in these sites which are always the same yet feature different characteristics.
“I want to capture exactly what I see in a given moment”, states Cerio, “I use my lights as instruments to construct images and create atmospheres which do not exist in reality”.
1/250 of a second is the exposure time used by Cerio to “cut any ambient light” and thus presents the spectator with an image of what the human eye doesn’t have the time to perceive.
As Walter Guadagnini noted (Percorsi di Cerio in Vice Versa, Rome 2012): “this condition creates a sensation of suspended time, a sort of metaphysical vision of things which distances objects from reality and transforms them into spectral apparitions. Where topographic photography reveals mutation, the photography of Cerio narrates suspension. Moreover all of these sites are photographed when – as commonly perceived – they are invisible (…). In an absolutely nonchalant manner, Cerio’s photographic ability renders the invisible, that which is normally far from sight, visible”.
Stefano Cerio lives and works in Rome and Paris. He began his career in photography at a very young age, working with L’Espresso, a weekly magazine. Since 2001, his interest has progressively focused on photographical research and video. His numerous exhibits include: Sintetico Italiano(Certosa di San Giacomo, Capri 2009), Aquapark (Fondazione Forma per la fotografia, Milan 2011), Night Ski (Studio Trisorio 2012), Chinese Fun (Fondazione Volume!, Rome 2015), Night Games(Camera Centro Italiano per la Fotografia, Turin 2017).
The exhibit will remain open to the public until 15 July, 2018.
